Carbohydrates are not as bad as they are considered to be by the nutritionists. Even in the form of junk food they do not cause trouble if are taken seldom. In definition large groups of food compounds that are formed by carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms are carbohydrates. Cellulose, sugar and starch are popular kinds of this food category. According to their nature, carbohydrates are divided into two categories, simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. But function of the both types in human body is same. They provide energy to human body just like as oil is a source of energy for engines in cars, motorbikes, busses, aero planes and etc. A balanced diet is essential to spend a healthy life and carbohydrates are an essential part of our daily diet. But if quantity of this food item increases then weight of body increases also. In order to avoid this problem (fatness), first you should take balanced diet and second you should take exercise on regular basis. Because even if your diet is not balanced then regular exercise will burn your extra calories.

Simple carbohydrates are present in large quantity in corn syrup, table sugar, candy, fruit juice, cake pasta made with white flour, bread made with white flour, soda pop, most packaged cereals, candy, milk, honey, all baked goods made with white flour, jam, biscuits, chocolate and yoghurt.

Complex Carbohydrates List

Complex carbohydrates foods are grapefruit, whole barley, spinach, lettuce, apples, buckwheat, turnip greens, pears, oatmeal, zucchini, dried apricots, oat bran bread, water cress, prunes, buckwheat bread, yams, brown rice, cabbage, oranges, wild rice, okra, strawberries, muesli, artichokes, plums, oat bran cereal, low fat yogurt, dill pickles, potatoes, pinto beans, cucumbers, carrots, multi-grain bread, celery, eggplant, kidney beans, cauliflower, sprouts, Brussels, garbanzo beans, navy beans, broccoli, lentils, skim milk, radishes, soybeans, split peas, whole meal bread, onions, lentils and Soy milk.

What is the difference between complex and simple carbohydrates?

Well, as I told you before carbohydrates are formed when large combinations of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen atoms get together. In this regard, simple carbohydrates are smaller molecules of carbohydrates. Glucose is their best example. Whereas, complex carbohydrates are formed when the smaller atoms get together in the form of chain and form larger molecules of carbohydrates. Foods that contain second type of carbohydrates, they contain more energy than simple carbohydrate foods but they also requires more time for digestion. Besides, the human body has to do more effort to get energy from foods with complex carbohydrates. Due to this reason extra sugar is converted into fats and stored in human body. This is the reason that you get fat when take carbohydrates in large quantities consistently.
